Daniela Marie Blackburn, aged 38, tragically died on July 14, 2022, in Marathon, Florida. The initial report to authorities was that she had committed suicide. Her boyfriend, Sean Booth Chidester, called 911, claiming that Blackburn had shot herself in the head while he was in another room. Upon arrival, first responders found Blackburn deceased with a gunshot wound to her head and a 9mm handgun nearby.
However, the investigation quickly revealed inconsistencies in Chidester's account.
The Monroe County Sheriff's Office conducted a thorough investigation, which included an autopsy. The medical examiner determined that the wound was not consistent with a self-inflicted gunshot. Additionally, Blackburn had no history of mental illness or suicidal tendencies, further casting doubt on the suicide claim. Detectives also discovered a history of domestic violence between Blackburn and Chidester, with Blackburn having called 911 earlier in the month to report multiple assaults by Chidester. Despite this, she had declined to press charges at the time, citing that Chidester had "a beautiful side to him."
Chidester was initially arrested for violating a no-contact order that had been issued on June 18, 2022, requiring him to stay away from Blackburn. As the investigation progressed, the Monroe County State Attorney's Office decided to charge Chidester with murder. He was charged with one count each of dangerous and depraved murder without premeditation, kidnapping, and two counts of violating the no-contact order. Chidester's arrest and subsequent charges were based on the evidence gathered, including the autopsy findings and the history of domestic violence.
The case against Chidester highlighted the tragic consequences of domestic violence and the importance of taking such reports seriously. The Monroe County Sheriff's Office, along with the State Attorney's Office and the Medical Examiner's Office, worked diligently to resolve the case and bring justice for Blackburn. Chidester was held in jail on a $1 million bond as the legal proceedings continued.
