George Elmer Estes, a 39-year-old police officer from Colton, California, tragically lost his life on April 13, 1923. Officer Estes was escorting three burglary suspects to the police station when one of the men attacked him and shot him in the head. This incident occurred in front of the Colton police station, and Estes was killed instantly. The suspects fled the scene, leading to a massive manhunt involving hundreds of armed men and multiple law enforcement agencies.
The suspects,
identified as three Mexican men, were pursued by posses throughout the night. One of the suspects, Jesus Garcia, was apprehended and confessed to being involved in the incident. He identified Ambrosio Acebedo as a companion, although Acebedo was not present at the actual shooting. Despite the intense search and eventual capture of all three suspects in San Diego two weeks later, there was insufficient evidence to charge them with murder.
The community of Colton was deeply affected by the tragedy, with many residents volunteering to join the search efforts. The incident highlighted the dangers faced by law enforcement officers and the challenges in bringing perpetrators to justice. Officer Estes had served with the Colton Police Department for only a year and was survived by his wife and five children.
