On August 13, 1965, the Boles family, including 12-year-old Thomas Eugene Boles, traveled to their new cabin in Crestline, California, for a weekend getaway. Tragically, their trip ended in a horrific crime. By August 16, concerned family members, unable to reach them, alerted authorities. Upon arrival at the cabin, investigators discovered the lifeless bodies of James and Darlene Boles, along with their sons Bobby and Thomas, and the family dog.
The victims had been shot to death, with James and Bobby found next to the bed, and Darlene and Thomas in the closet.
The investigation into the Boles family's murder was extensive. Initially, several suspects were considered, but most were eventually ruled out. A significant lead emerged with George Robert Stewart, who was already wanted in Alabama for another murder. Stewart allegedly failed a polygraph test related to the Boles case, but there was insufficient evidence to charge him. Despite the detectives' strong belief in his guilt, the case against Stewart did not hold up.
Years later, on the 40th anniversary of the murders, a new detective reviewed the case and concluded that Stewart had an alibi for the time of the murders, casting doubt on his involvement. The case remains unsolved, with no definitive answers about who was responsible for the brutal slayings of the Boles family.
