Sean Orlando Mabrey, aged 21, was tragically killed on December 8, 1986, in what became one of Oakland's most notorious mass murders. The incident occurred in the early hours of the morning when David Esco "Moochie" Welch, a 28-year-old heroin and cocaine dealer, stormed into a home in East Oakland. Welch, accompanied by his girlfriend Rita Lewis, went on a rampage, shooting six people, including two toddlers, as they slept.
Welch's violent outburst was reportedly triggered by a breakup with his 16-year-old girlfriend, Dellane Mabrey, who was among the victims. Welch resented Dellane's mother, Barbara Mabrey, for opposing their relationship and was also upset over the death of one of his pit bulls, which had been hit by a car while in the care of Dellane's brothers.
The massacre claimed the lives of Dellane Mabrey, her 3-year-old daughter Valencia Morgan, her brothers Darnell Mabrey and Sean Orlando Mabrey, and family friend Kathy Walker along with her 4-year-old son, Dwayne Miller. Dellane's boyfriend, Leslie Morgan, and her 3-month-old son, Dexter, were wounded but survived the attack. Barbara Mabrey and her daughter Stacey managed to escape the carnage. Welch and Lewis were arrested nine hours after the shootings at a house about two miles away from the crime scene.
The motive behind the killings was described as senseless and trivial by police investigators. Welch's fits of temper and his tumultuous relationship with Dellane had led to a series of disputes between the families. On the night before the massacre, Welch had a fistfight with Orlando Mabrey over one of the pit bulls. Welch's violent tendencies and inability to accept the end of his relationship with Dellane culminated in the horrific events of that December morning.
David Welch was convicted of the murders and sentenced to death in July 1989. He remains on death row at San Quentin State Prison. The case has left a lasting impact on the Oakland community, highlighting the devastating consequences of domestic violence and uncontrolled rage.
