The incident was part of a horrific event where Reynaldo Herrera Rodriguez, driven by a misguided belief that his ex-girlfriend had given him a viral disease, entered her home and opened fire on her family members. Rodriguez, a 35-year-old civil engineer, had been casually dating Maria Rios, the granddaughter of Esperanza Martinez. After their relationship ended, Rodriguez harbored resentment and wrongly accused Rios of infecting him with a virus.
On that fateful day, Rodriguez entered the home through the garage and began shooting. Esperanza Martinez, along with two other family members, Ricardo Calderon, aged 12, and Shantal Rios, aged 4, were killed in the attack. Two other family members, Lucia Vargas and Rigoberto Calderon, were injured but survived. Lucia was shot in the abdomen and hand, while Rigoberto was shot in the leg. He had driven his SUV into the forest and set up camp, attempting to evade capture. When law enforcement officers closed in on his location, Rodriguez took his own life.
