Benjamin Velasco, an 18-year-old from Paramount, California, tragically lost his life on July 29, 2007, in a violent incident that also claimed the life of 21-year-old Julio Ramirez. The two young men were attending a family gathering on the evening of July 28, 2007, when they were shot by gang members in a drive-by shooting. The attack occurred at approximately 11 p.m. on Hayter Avenue in Paramount.
Velasco and Ramirez were both transported to Long Beach Memorial Hospital, where Velasco succumbed to his injuries at around 2 a.m. on July 29, 2007, and Ramirez died five hours later.
The investigation into the double homicide revealed that the shooting was gang-related. Luis Jesus Rodriguez, a documented member of the Paramount Barrio gang, was identified as the primary suspect. On the night of the shooting, Rodriguez armed himself with an AK-47 and, along with his brother Daniel Cowie and their friend Irvin Heredia, drove to the neighborhood of a rival gang. Rodriguez exited the vehicle and opened fire on Velasco and Ramirez, who were standing outside the family gathering. After the shooting, Rodriguez fled the scene in the getaway vehicle driven by Cowie.
Following the incident, law enforcement officials launched an extensive investigation that led to the arrests of Rodriguez, Cowie, and Heredia. Rodriguez was charged with two counts of first-degree murder and was found guilty by a jury in February 2014. The jury also found true the special circumstances that the murders were committed to further the activities of a criminal street gang and that Rodriguez had a prior conviction for first-degree murder. As a result, Rodriguez was sentenced to death on September 21, 2015. Cowie, who drove the getaway vehicle, was convicted in 2009 and sentenced in 2010 to 40 years to life in prison. Heredia, who was a passenger in the car, pleaded guilty to manslaughter in 2009 and received an 11-year prison sentence.
