Joseph S. "Joe" Ortega, aged 80, tragically lost his life on December 24, 2008, in Covina, California, during a horrific event known as the Covina massacre. This incident occurred at his annual Christmas Eve party, which he hosted at his home on Knollcrest Drive. The massacre was perpetrated by Bruce Jeffrey Pardo, the ex-husband of Ortega's daughter, Sylvia.
Pardo arrived at the party uninvited, dressed in a Santa Claus suit, and armed with four semi-automatic handguns and a homemade flamethrower concealed in a gift-wrapped package.
The attack began when an 8-year-old girl opened the door to Pardo, who immediately shot her in the face, wounding her. Pardo then entered the home and began shooting indiscriminately at the party guests, killing nine people, including Joseph Ortega and his wife, Alicia. Amid the chaos, Pardo used the flamethrower to douse the house in racing fuel and set it on fire, causing further devastation. The fire and gunshots resulted in the deaths of nine family members and injuries to three others.
Following the massacre, Pardo fled the scene and drove to his brother's home in Sylmar, where he was later found dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Investigations revealed that Pardo had meticulously planned the attack and his escape. He had rented multiple vehicles, one of which was found near the home of his ex-wife's divorce attorney, suggesting that the attorney might have also been a target. Additionally, Pardo had purchased a plane ticket to Moline, Illinois, and was carrying cash strapped to his body, indicating his intention to flee.
The Covina massacre shocked the community and led to extensive investigations. Law enforcement officials discovered that Pardo's actions were likely motivated by his recent divorce from Sylvia, which had been finalized just a week before the killings.
