Sebastian Dvorak, a 27-year-old white male, was tragically killed as he walked home in the early morning hours of June 13, 2017, after celebrating his birthday. The popular Canton bartender was in the 2500 block of Boston Street when he was robbed and shot in the chest. Found unresponsive in the street with a gunshot wound to his torso and several cuts and bruises, Dvorak was transported to Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center, where he ultimately succumbed to his injuries.
A woman reportedly held him in her arms as he fought for his life.
The investigation into Dvorak's death led authorities to a violent drug and criminal organization known as the '500 L' gang, an affiliate of the Bloods. In August 2018, Maryland's Attorney General announced the indictment of 13 members of this gang on various charges, including crimes related to Dvorak's murder. The gang was involved in drug and gun trafficking, robbery, and murder.
Among those indicted was Malik Mungo, who was 16 years old at the time of the killing. Prosecutors stated that Mungo, a member of the 500 L gang, was the one who robbed and shot Dvorak. A high-ranking gang member, Robert Lewis, allegedly provided Mungo with the gun used in the crime. After the murder, Mungo was reportedly in possession of Dvorak's cell phone and Nintendo Switch. Gang members were said to have advised Mungo that the act was caught on surveillance and then disposed of the murder weapon.
Malik Mungo's first trial on murder and gang-related charges ended in a mistrial after the jury was unable to reach a unanimous verdict on eight of the counts. However, in October 2021, a jury convicted a then 21-year-old Mungo of first-degree felony murder, robbery, and gang-related charges. In December 2021, he was sentenced to life in prison with all but 45 years suspended for the murder, with an additional five consecutive years for gang participation resulting in death. At his sentencing, Mungo cried and apologized to Dvorak's family.
Several other members of the 500 L gang were also convicted and sentenced for their roles in the criminal enterprise. Robert Lewis received a 15-year sentence for charges including gang participation and being an accessory after the fact to first-degree murder for providing and later helping to dispose of the murder weapon. Two other members, Keith Worthington and Harvey Turner, were sentenced to 10 years in prison on gang and drug charges. In total, all 13 defendants charged in the 2018 indictment were either convicted or pleaded guilty.
