Ricardo "Rick" Zetino Jr., a 31-year-old resident of Los Angeles, California, tragically lost his life on January 25, 2014. The incident occurred in the parking lot of Los Angeles Valley College, located in Valley Glen. According to the Los Angeles County coroner’s records, Zetino was discovered by police officers outside a vehicle with multiple gunshot wounds. Despite being rushed to a hospital, he was pronounced dead at 8:05 p.m.
An autopsy later confirmed that the cause of death was a gunshot wound to the chest.
The investigation into Zetino's death revealed that the shooting was likely the result of a drug deal gone wrong. The college parking lot was chosen as a random meeting spot for the transaction. At the time of the incident, no classes or campus activities were in session, minimizing the risk to students and staff. The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department quickly identified and arrested two suspects: Raheen Ahab Taylor, a 31-year-old man from San Jacinto, and Derrick Phillip Wilson, a 25-year-old man from San Diego. Both men were apprehended on suspicion of murder just one day after the shooting.
Taylor and Wilson were charged with one count of murder, with a special circumstances allegation of murder during the course of a robbery. Additionally, they faced three counts of second-degree robbery, with special allegations that they had intentionally discharged a handgun during the commission of the crime. Both suspects were held without bail as they awaited trial. The Los Angeles County district attorney’s office indicated that a decision on whether to seek the death penalty would be made at a later date.
The case against Taylor and Wilson progressed through the legal system, with both men pleading not guilty to the charges. The preliminary hearings and subsequent court proceedings were closely followed by the community, as the tragic nature of Zetino's death and the circumstances surrounding it drew significant attention.
