Gloria Espinoza Tovar, a 59-year-old Latina, was tragically shot and killed on August 24, 2014, in San Fernando, California. She was sitting in her parked car on Filmore Street in Pacoima, waiting to pick up a friend for church, when she was shot in the head around 6:45 a.m. and died at the scene. This incident was part of a series of random shootings that occurred in the Pacoima-San Fernando area that morning, resulting in the deaths of three individuals within an hour. The other victims included Mariana Franco, who was shot while riding in a car with her family, and Michael Planells, who was shot while searching for cans to recycle.
The suspect in these shootings, Alexander Hernandez, was charged with five counts of capital murder and ten counts of attempted murder. Hernandez's shooting spree spanned several months, during which he targeted random individuals in the San Fernando Valley. His attacks were seemingly without motive, and he often fired from his vehicle. Hernandez was also linked to the murders of Sergio Sanchez and Gildardo Morales, as well as several other non-fatal shootings.
Hernandez's arrest came after a standoff with SWAT at his home in Sylmar. He faced multiple charges, including murder, attempted murder, and animal cruelty, as he had also shot and killed several dogs. The special circumstance of a drive-by shooting made Hernandez eligible for the death penalty, although prosecutors later decided against pursuing capital punishment. In 2022, Hernandez was convicted of all charges and sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.
