Hunter was the youngest in his family, born on July 17, 2003, in Modesto, California. He was a student at John Mayer in Modesto and had previously attended Shasta School in Manteca. Hunter was known for his love of football, fishing, and wrestling, particularly enjoying matches featuring John Cena.
He was also an active member of the Central Valley Baptist Church in Manteca.
The incident that led to Hunter's death occurred at a house party where alcohol and marijuana were present. Two adults, Carlos Calzado and Christa McGrath, were arrested for providing alcohol to minors and consuming it with them. The party took a tragic turn when a 17-year-old boy, Zachary Hurlburt Erhardt, brought a stolen gun to the gathering. Erhardt, who was initially charged with attempted murder, had his charges upgraded to murder after Hunter succumbed to his injuries. The evidence suggested that Erhardt knew the gun was loaded and intentionally fired it, resulting in Hunter's fatal injury and a non-life-threatening wound to Hunter's brother.
Following the shooting, Hunter was taken to UC Davis Medical Hospital, where he remained in a coma until he was taken off life support on September 15, 2014. His organs were donated, as his family made the difficult decision to help others in need. The case drew significant attention, highlighting the dangers of underage drinking and the presence of firearms at social gatherings.
