Phillip Liberto, a 23-year-old resident of Fairfield, CA, tragically lost his life following a gang-related shooting incident. On July 22, 2015, Liberto was shot in the parking lot of an apartment complex on Phoenix Drive. The altercation occurred when Liberto, along with fellow gang members Jaime Ponce Hernandez, Jamison P. Nodine, and Leonel Garcia Flores Jr., confronted an individual who had severed ties with their gang. During the confrontation, Nodine accidentally shot Liberto.
Despite being transported to a trauma center, Liberto succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead on July 27, 2015.
The investigation into Liberto's death led to the arrest and prosecution of the involved gang members. Jaime Ponce Hernandez, 24, was sentenced to nine years and four months in state prison after pleading no contest to reduced charges of voluntary manslaughter and attempted murder. Leonel Garcia Flores Jr., 23, received an eight-year sentence for assault with a firearm, with an added gang enhancement. Jamison P. Nodine, 21, faced charges of voluntary manslaughter, assault with force likely to produce great bodily injury, and conspiracy, resulting in a sentence of 17 years and eight months in state prison.
