Juan Carlos Muñoz Jr., an 18-year-old from National City, California, tragically lost his life on October 11, 2015, in a gang-related shooting. On that fateful evening, Muñoz was behind the wheel of his car with a 17-year-old passenger when they were ambushed. The assailants, mistaking Muñoz and his companion for rival gang members, followed them in a car and eventually pulled in front of their vehicle near the intersection of Prospect and East 16th streets.
The attackers, identified as Roger Hernandez and Luis Karam, issued a gang challenge before opening fire. Muñoz sustained fatal gunshot wounds to his arm, shoulder, and neck, while his passenger was shot in the leg but survived.
The investigation into Muñoz's death led to the arrests of Hernandez and Karam in late 2018. Hernandez, who was 34 at the time of his sentencing, was convicted of murder and attempted murder. He received a sentence of 67 years to life in state prison. Karam, who was 33, pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter and was sentenced to 20 years in state prison. The prosecution argued that the two men had mistaken Muñoz and his passenger for gang rivals, leading to the tragic and senseless shooting.
The case drew significant attention and highlighted the pervasive issue of gang violence in the area. San Diego County District Attorney Summer Stephan emphasized the tragedy of Muñoz being an innocent victim caught in the wrong place at the wrong time. The sentencing of Hernandez and Karam was seen as a measure of justice for Muñoz's family, who had endured years of grief and uncertainty. The case also underscored the ongoing efforts by law enforcement and community leaders to combat gang violence and ensure the safety of neighborhoods in National City and beyond.
