Brandon Douglas, a 25-year-old resident of Pasadena, California, was tragically shot to death on December 22, 2016. The incident occurred around 9:45 p.m. in the 1200 block of North Fair Oaks Avenue. Despite being rushed to a nearby hospital, Douglas succumbed to his injuries approximately an hour later. The initial investigation by Pasadena police indicated that the homicide was in its early stages, with authorities urging anyone with information to come forward to aid in solving the crime.
The investigation into Douglas's death revealed that it was part of a larger pattern of violence linked to gang activity in the area. Detectives discovered an ongoing feud between street gangs in Pasadena and Duarte, which was believed to be the catalyst for the shootings. This gang rivalry led to a series of violent incidents, including the deaths of Antoine Sutphen Jr. and Ormoni Duncan, both 24 years old, who were killed on January 7, 2017, while attending a vigil for Douglas in the same block where he was murdered.
In December 2019, Derion Lee, a 36-year-old member of a Duarte gang, was convicted of conspiracy and three counts of first-degree murder for his role in the killings of Brandon Douglas, Antoine Sutphen Jr., and Ormoni Duncan. The jury found true special circumstance allegations of multiple murders, murder by discharge of a firearm from a vehicle, and gang-related charges. Lee was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. His co-defendants, Isiah Daniels, Pernell Barnes, and Charod Robinson, were also convicted and awaited sentencing in the following months. A fifth defendant, Andrew Vasquez, was acquitted of all charges.
During the sentencing, Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Charlaine F. Olmedo described the crimes as "tragic, callous, and cowardly," emphasizing the devastating impact on the victims' families and the community. Family members of the victims, including Douglas's mother, Kathy Morgan, and Nandi Hughes, who was pregnant with Douglas's child at the time of his death, provided emotional statements to the court, highlighting the profound loss and enduring pain caused by the murders. The case underscored the severe consequences of gang violence and the ongoing efforts by law enforcement to address and mitigate such criminal activities in the region.
