Cristian Gomez, a 31-year-old Latino, was tragically shot and killed on April 5, 2017, in the Boyle Heights neighborhood of Los Angeles, California. According to the Los Angeles County coroner’s records, the incident occurred around 11:20 a.m. while Gomez was walking east on the sidewalk along the 2200 block of Whittier Boulevard. A person driving a four-door silver sedan stopped, exited the vehicle, and approached Gomez.
The assailant fired two shots, one of which struck Gomez in the face, before fleeing the scene westward on Whittier Boulevard. Gomez was pronounced dead at 11:29 a.m. at the scene.
The investigation into Gomez's death quickly gained momentum as police gathered witness statements and reviewed surveillance footage from the area. The video evidence was crucial in identifying the suspect and the vehicle involved in the shooting. On April 11, 2017, police spotted Josue Loreto, a 28-year-old Latino, driving the same silver sedan captured in the surveillance footage. Loreto attempted to evade the police, leading them on a pursuit that ended at his apartment. He was subsequently taken into custody.
Loreto was charged with one count of murder and one count of fleeing a pursuing peace officer’s motor vehicle while driving recklessly. The Los Angeles County district attorney’s office confirmed these charges, and Loreto was scheduled to be arraigned on May 17, 2017. The case against Loreto was built on the strong evidence provided by the surveillance footage and witness testimonies, which linked him directly to the crime scene and the murder of Cristian Gomez.
