Siosifa Toetuu Mooni Maama, a 21-year-old Tongan man, tragically lost his life on July 19, 2017, in Los Angeles, California. Maama was working as an unarmed security guard at a marijuana dispensary located in the 11400 block of South Broadway in the Broadway-Manchester area of South Los Angeles. On that fateful night, a group of between four and six individuals attempted to rob the dispensary. During the robbery, a struggle ensued between Maama and the would-be robbers, resulting in Maama being shot. Two other individuals inside the dispensary were also shot, but they survived their injuries. Maama, however, was pronounced dead at the scene at 10:10 p.m.
The suspects involved in the robbery and shooting were described as black men, possibly around 30 years old. Some of the suspects fled on foot, while others escaped in a light-colored sedan. Despite the efforts of the Los Angeles Police Department to gather information and track down the perpetrators, the case remains unresolved. Authorities have urged anyone with information to come forward, offering anonymity through Crime Stoppers.
In the aftermath of Maama's death, his family and community were left devastated. Maama was remembered as a kind and respectful individual, a loving father to his 20-month-old daughter Manaia, and a talented athlete who excelled in football and rugby during his high school years. His untimely death not only left a void in the lives of his loved ones but also highlighted the senseless violence that continues to plague communities.
Efforts to bring justice for Maama have included public appeals for information and support from the community. However, as of now, there have been no significant developments in terms of arrests or prosecutions related to his murder.
