Brajoni Christian Freeman, a 32-year-old barber from Fresno, California, was tragically found dead in his apartment near Fresno State on July 19, 2017. Freeman was discovered by his fiancée, unconscious and bleeding from a gunshot wound to the head. Despite being rushed to Community Regional Medical Center, he succumbed to his injuries the following day.
The investigation revealed that Freeman had been robbed, with only $13 in cash left in his home, and evidence of a struggle was found at the scene.
The Fresno Police Department quickly identified two suspects in connection with Freeman's murder: Marquise Graves, 24, and Jahleel McGruder, 27. Both men were known members of the Northside Pleasant Street gang. Surveillance footage and evidence collected at the scene, including a trail of cocaine, linked the suspects to the crime. Graves and McGruder were arrested and charged with first-degree murder, committing the crime as gang members, and special weapons charges. They both pleaded not guilty in court.
The case against Graves and McGruder was built on substantial evidence, including video footage from a traffic stop involving Graves less than a month before the murder. The footage showed Graves driving a car that matched the description of the vehicle seen at the crime scene. Additionally, other surveillance videos from a nearby church captured the suspects at Freeman's apartment around the time of the murder. The preliminary hearings revealed more details about the police work that led to the arrests, including the discovery of the suspects' getaway path.
Freeman's family was left devastated by his untimely death. They described him as a passionate barber who loved his work and was not involved in any gang activities. His mother found some solace in knowing that Freeman was an organ donor, and his death helped save other lives. The suspects, Graves and McGruder, were held on $1,530,000 bail each and faced the possibility of life without parole or the death penalty if convicted. The case highlighted the ongoing issue of gang violence in Fresno and the efforts of law enforcement to bring those responsible to justice.
