Douglas Ferguson, aged 59, was tragically killed on October 12, 2017, in Aliso Viejo, California. The incident occurred when his son, Luke William Ferguson, shot him multiple times after an argument. The altercation began when Douglas told Luke to stop drinking beer and get a job. Upon returning home from work, Douglas was confronted by Luke, who descended the stairs with a handgun and shot his father without uttering a word. After Douglas fell, Luke shot him again, ensuring his death.
The violent spree did not end there. Luke proceeded to shoot his father's girlfriend, Lisa Cosenza, aged 51, in the head, killing her instantly. He then targeted two roommates, Todd Kuchar and Brandon Dufault, who were also present in the home. Kuchar was shot multiple times as he fled the scene, while Dufault was shot several times while in the shower, after Luke kicked down the bathroom door. Miraculously, both Kuchar and Dufault survived the attack.
Following the shootings, Luke Ferguson fled the scene in Dufault's vehicle. He was later apprehended in Inglewood after a police chase. During the investigation, it was revealed that Luke had moved back into his father's home about six weeks prior to the incident. The household had been experiencing tension due to Luke's unemployment and excessive drinking, which ultimately led to the fatal confrontation.
Luke Ferguson was charged with two counts of first-degree murder and two counts of attempted murder. He was also charged with special circumstance allegations of multiple murders and sentencing enhancements for personally discharging a firearm causing great bodily injury or death. In August 2022, Luke was sentenced to life without the possibility of parole, plus an additional 84 years and four months in prison. The court's decision ensured that he would spend the rest of his life behind bars, unable to harm anyone else.
