On that fateful day, Sandy and her husband, Michael Daniel Mayberry, were involved in a heated argument at their home. The altercation escalated when Sandy attempted to leave the house. As she was walking out, Michael shot her multiple times in the back.
Despite her injuries, Sandy managed to crawl into the front yard, where Michael delivered a final, fatal shot to her head. She was pronounced dead at the scene shortly after 3 p.m.
The couple's four children and Michael's mother were present in the house during the incident, although they did not witness the shooting directly.
