Mark Allen Corona Arredondo Jr., aged 35, tragically passed away on June 3, 2018, in Wildomar, California. Mark was a beloved member of his community, known for his kind and gentle nature despite his imposing 6-foot-6-inch frame. On the day of his death, Mark was sitting in his vehicle outside Stadium Pizza, a popular local eatery, when he was approached from behind and shot multiple times.
Witnesses reported that the shooter initially walked away but returned to fire additional shots, ensuring Mark's death. This brutal and public act of violence shocked the community and left his family and friends devastated.
The investigation into Mark's murder quickly identified his second cousin, Paul Henry Carl Stoeppler, as the perpetrator. Paul and Mark had grown up together and were very close, almost like brothers. However, Paul had been struggling with severe mental health issues, including post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), depression, and paranoia, exacerbated by his experiences in the military and personal tragedies, such as the suicide of his sister and the death of his mother. These mental health struggles led Paul to develop delusional beliefs, including the unfounded notion that Mark had harmed him and was responsible for his sister's death.
On the day of the murder, Paul and Mark had planned to meet for lunch at Stadium Pizza. However, before heading to the restaurant, Paul experienced a severe mental breakdown, becoming enraged and violent. This episode culminated in Paul arming himself and confronting Mark at the pizza place, where he carried out the fatal shooting. Paul did not attempt to flee or hide his actions, and he was quickly apprehended by law enforcement.
The legal proceedings following Mark's death were swift. Paul Stoeppler was charged with first-degree murder and, on March 4, 2019, he was sentenced to 25 years to life in prison. The case highlighted the tragic consequences of untreated mental illness and the devastating impact it can have on individuals and their families.
