Juan Antonio Lopez, a 23-year-old Latino, was fatally shot on July 28, 2018, in the 8800 block of South Vermont Avenue in the South Los Angeles community of Westmont. Vermont Ave. and was walking out with an acquaintance at around 8:14 p.m. when a dark-colored sedan pulled up in front of the store.
Three men exited the vehicle and began shooting at Lopez and his acquaintance, a 21-year-old black male. Both men, along with four Latino bystanders, were struck by gunfire. Lopez was pronounced dead at the scene at 8:51 p.m. His acquaintance was taken to the hospital with injuries he was expected to survive. Three of the four bystanders were also hospitalized, with one, Juan Manuel Ayuso, a 51-year-old Latino, succumbing to his injuries at 8:46 p.m. The fourth bystander had minor injuries and refused treatment.
The investigation into Lopez’s death revealed that the shooters fled the scene in the dark-colored sedan, heading south on South Vermont Avenue. Despite the severity of the incident, investigators did not have a detailed description of the assailants beyond their gender. The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department indicated that Lopez was not involved in any gang activities, and it remained unclear whether the shooters or Lopez’s acquaintance had gang affiliations.
