Marcos Sandoval, a 52-year-old man, was fatally shot while walking his dog in the early morning hours of March 12, 2022, in the Mid-City neighborhood of Los Angeles. The incident occurred near the intersection of Genesee Avenue and Saturn Street at approximately 5 a.m. Sandoval was reportedly approached by a dark-colored sedan, and after an exchange of words, multiple gunshots were fired. Surveillance footage captured the tragic moment, showing Sandoval’s dog running back home after the shooting. Authorities later found Sandoval at around 6:15 a.m., and paramedics pronounced him dead at the scene.
Following an extensive investigation, law enforcement officials identified 21-year-old Cliffton Kamal-Christopher Styles as the suspect in Sandoval’s murder. Styles, originally from San Marcos, Texas, had reportedly traveled across the country before committing the crime. Detectives believe the attack was random and unprovoked, and they suspect Styles may have been suffering from mental illness at the time. After the shooting, Styles continued his travels, making stops in San Diego before returning to Texas.
On April 27, 2022, Styles was arrested at his residence in San Marcos, Texas, by the San Marcos Police Department in coordination with the Los Angeles Police Department and the FBI Fugitive Task Force. He was charged with the murder of Sandoval and faced extradition to Los Angeles to stand trial. Investigators also explored the possibility that Styles had been involved in other acts of predatory violence during his cross-country journey. Sandoval’s family and neighbors were left devastated by the senseless killing, with many expressing concerns about safety in their community following the incident.
