In the spring of 2021, the city of Watertown, New York, was shaken by a senseless act of violence that claimed the life of a beloved community member. Maxine M. Quigg, a 50-year-old woman, was fatally shot on April 28, 2021, in a tragic event that also took the life of her business partner. The incident, which unfolded at their real estate office, sent shockwaves through the quiet community, leaving friends, family, and colleagues to grapple with the sudden and devastating loss.

Quigg, along with her colleague Terence O'Brien, was a co-owner of Bridgeview Real Estate Services. On that fateful Wednesday, a former employee, 55-year-old Barry K. Stewart, entered their Clinton Street office and opened fire, killing both Quigg and O'Brien. Stewart had previously worked as a real estate agent at their firm before starting his own franchise. The motive for the shooting remains unclear, though it is believed to be rooted in professional grievances.
Immediately following the shooting, Stewart fled the scene, prompting an extensive manhunt by law enforcement. A 'Be On the Lookout' alert was issued, and a New York State Police K9 unit eventually spotted his vehicle in Franklin County. When troopers attempted to pull him over, Stewart drove off the roadway. He was later found inside his vehicle with a self-inflicted gunshot wound and was pronounced dead at a nearby hospital.
The investigation into the deaths of Maxine Quigg and Terence O'Brien concluded that Stewart acted alone. With the perpetrator deceased, no arrests were made in connection with the murders.
