In the early morning hours of February 16, 2022, a journey on a Long Island Rail Road train ended in tragedy for 20-year-old Yusef Staine of West Babylon. Staine, a young male, was shot and killed while on a westbound train stopped at the Ronkonkoma station. The incident occurred around 1:45 a.m., and he was pronounced dead at the scene. The shooting appeared to be an isolated event, with no one else on the train being injured.
Initial reports from Suffolk County police indicated that
Staine was seemingly traveling with the man who shot him. Surveillance footage from the train showed that there was no apparent dispute between Staine and his companion leading up to the fatal moment. The two had traveled from Penn Station to Ronkonkoma and were on a westbound train, seemingly heading back towards Wyandanch after missing their stop. As they boarded the train car, the suspect, who was walking behind Staine, shot him once in the back of the head and then again in the torso after he had collapsed to the ground.
For over a year, the case remained under investigation until a significant breakthrough led to an arrest. On May 18, 2023, Nicholas D'Agostino, 20, of Yonkers, was arrested and charged with the murder of his friend. Investigators pieced together evidence showing that D'Agostino had traveled from Arizona to visit Staine just days before the shooting. After the incident, D'Agostino fled the Ronkonkoma station, used a rideshare service, and eventually took a Greyhound bus back to Arizona.
Nicholas D'Agostino was indicted on charges of second-degree murder and criminal possession of a weapon. Although he initially pleaded not guilty, he later changed his plea. In January 2025, D'Agostino pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and weapons charges. In April 2025, he was sentenced to 20 years to life in prison. While a motive for the killing was not provided by prosecutors, the court proceedings brought a legal conclusion to the case, though the reasons behind the sudden act of violence remain unclear to Staine's family.
