In the early morning hours of March 19, 2022, a 37-year-old male named Humberto Manuel Francis Hernandez was working his shift as an Uber driver in Long Beach, New York. Just before 2:30 a.m., he arrived at 425 East Broadway to pick up a passenger. As he entered the vestibule of the apartment building, he was tragically shot in the head and arm. First responders found him bleeding and rushed him to Mount Sinai South Nassau Hospital in Oceanside, where he underwent emergency surgery. Despite the medical efforts, his condition worsened, and he succumbed to his injuries four days later, on March 23, 2022.
The investigation into the shooting led Nassau County homicide detectives to a resident of the building, Shaun Teemer. Teemer was arrested in connection with the fatal shooting. The investigation revealed that Hernandez was at the location to pick up a fare when he was shot by Teemer. Initially, the gunman had fled the scene, and for a time, no suspects were identified. The Nassau County Crime Stoppers even offered a reward for information leading to an arrest.
Shaun Teemer, who was 23 years old at the time of his arrest, was charged with second-degree murder and criminal possession of a weapon. It was also revealed that Teemer was involved in a separate hit-and-run incident that occurred six months prior to the shooting, which had seriously injured a 73-year-old woman. In June 2023, Teemer pleaded guilty to the charges against him, including the murder of Humberto Manuel Francis-Hernandez. Subsequently, he was sentenced to a term of 20 years to life in prison for his violent and senseless actions that cut short the life of a man simply doing his job.
