In the early morning hours of June 22, 2007, a fatal encounter unfolded in the parking lot of a tavern in Upper Marlboro, Maryland. Brian Comploier, a male from Crofton, was shot and killed during a confrontation outside of what was then known as Wyvill's Tavern or the 301 Bar and Grill, located on Crain Highway. The man responsible for the shooting was a security officer at the establishment.
The security guard admitted to shooting Comploier, but claimed he acted in self-defense or the defense of others. The circumstances leading up to the shooting were heavily disputed. An investigation into the incident was launched, and the security guard was later arrested in Florida on December 31, 2007, before being transported back to Maryland to face legal proceedings.
The subsequent jury trial took place from January 5 to January 8, 2009.
The prosecution presented ten witnesses, including individuals present at the scene, forensics and medical experts, and the police officers who investigated the case. They argued that the evidence did not support the claim of self-defense. The defense maintained that the security guard's actions were justified. During the trial, it was revealed that at the time of his death, Comploier had two vials containing a total of 2.15 grams of PCP in his pocket, though this evidence was excluded from the trial. An autopsy report concluded that Comploier died from gunshot wounds to the head, neck, back, and arm.
