In the early morning hours of December 28, 2012, in the 6000 block of Moravia Park Drive in Baltimore, Maryland, Daniel James Schaefer, a 35-year-old White male, was shot during the course of a robbery. The violent encounter left him with devastating injuries that he would battle for the next decade of his life.
Following the shooting, Schaefer was rendered a quadriplegic, a condition he lived with for 10 years.
His life was irrevocably changed, and he faced significant daily challenges as a result of the violence he endured. On November 24, 2022, at the age of 45, Daniel James Schaefer passed away. His death was a direct consequence of the injuries he sustained in the 2012 shooting. After an investigation, the medical examiner officially ruled his death a homicide on May 9, 2023.
In the initial investigation of the 2012 shooting, authorities identified a suspect. On February 4, 2013, Laquan Ferome was arrested and subsequently charged with attempted first-degree murder in connection with the robbery and shooting of Schaefer. Following the reclassification of Schaefer's death as a homicide, law enforcement officials have indicated they are consulting with the State's Attorney's Office to determine if new or upgraded charges will be filed against Ferome.
