In the early evening of a Saturday in Glen Burnie, Maryland, the life of 38-year-old Angela Beatrice Randolph came to a tragic end. On June 7, 2014, at the Cromwell Station light rail stop, an altercation with a Maryland Transit Administration police officer escalated, resulting in Randolph being fatally shot.
The incident began when MTA Officer Tracy Turpin, a three-year veteran of the force, was approached by two individuals who reported a disturbance involving Randolph.
When Officer Turpin went to speak with Randolph, a verbal confrontation quickly turned violent. Randolph assaulted the officer, choking her and pulling her hair. Several bystanders attempted to intervene and help the officer, but were unsuccessful in separating the two.
According to police reports from the time, Officer Turpin, unable to break free and stating she was in fear for her life, drew her service weapon and fired a single shot, striking Randolph in the upper leg. Both Randolph and Officer Turpin were transported to a local hospital. Randolph later died from her injuries. Officer Turpin was treated for non-life-threatening injuries and released.
The investigation into the deadly shooting was handed over to the Anne Arundel County Police Department. At the time, Officer Turpin was placed on routine administrative duty pending the outcome of the investigation. Publicly available information regarding the conclusion of the Anne Arundel County Police Department's investigation and any final determination regarding the officer's actions has not been located.
