In the early morning hours of September 10, 2017, the life of 22-year-old Garrett Burton, a rising rapper known in the Baton Rouge music scene as Da Real Gee Money, was tragically cut short. Burton was discovered in a parking lot in the 1900 block of Dallas Drive around 1:30 a.m., having sustained fatal gunshot wounds. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
For nearly two years, the investigation into Burton's death continued without a publicly named suspect.
Then, on June 7, 2019, the Baton Rouge Police Department announced a significant development in the case. Authorities arrested 24-year-old Deandre Demarcus Fields in connection with the 2017 shooting.
Fields was taken into custody and booked into the East Baton Rouge Parish Prison on one count of second-degree murder. Law enforcement officials stated that through their investigation, they had developed Fields as a suspect and gathered enough evidence to lead to his arrest. The investigation was noted as ongoing.
