In the quiet of a Perry Hall, Maryland home, the life of 12-year-old Julian Roary Jr., a Black male, was tragically cut short on July 17, 2015. The devastating event unfolded in the early hours of the morning when Julian's father, 47-year-old Julian Roary Sr., shot and killed him and his 10-year-old brother, Ian, before taking his own life. The boys' father was the sole suspect in their deaths, and as such, no arrests were made.
The grim discovery was made by the father's girlfriend,
Shantal Brown-Winn, who was at home at the time. Shortly after midnight, she heard popping sounds that she initially mistook for fireworks. When she went to investigate, she found the father and his two sons in a second-floor bedroom. Julian Jr. and his father were pronounced dead at the scene, while Ian was rushed to a nearby hospital where he later succumbed to his injuries.
According to Brown-Winn and others who knew him, Julian Roary Sr. was a devoted father who was very involved in his sons' lives, even coaching their sports teams. However, he had been facing significant financial difficulties. A man with a doctoral degree, he had lost a good job two years prior and had recently been let go from a temporary position. His girlfriend believed these financial pressures had become too much for him to bear. A note was left behind, further indicating the father's state of mind and the tragic circumstances that led to the deaths of his two young sons.
