In a tragic turn of events in White Plains, Maryland, a woman's life was cut short in what authorities have described as a murder-suicide. Candace Carnathan, a 33-year-old female, died on January 27, 2018. The day before her death, she had taken legal steps to protect herself and her children by obtaining a temporary protective order against her husband.
The following morning, one of the couple's children made a harrowing 911 call, reporting a disturbance between his parents and what he
believed were gunshots. The 911 operator instructed the child to take his two younger siblings and hide in the basement. When Charles County police officers arrived at the Amberton Court home, they found the three children unharmed and brought them to safety.
Upon searching the residence, officers discovered the bodies of Candace and her 33-year-old husband, Calvin Carnathan, in an upstairs bedroom. The investigation concluded that Calvin Carnathan shot his wife before taking his own life. The protective order, which had been served to him the previous evening, mandated that he vacate the family home and have no contact with his wife or children. Neighbors reported that the couple had been having significant disputes and were in the process of divorcing.
