In the early morning hours of May 6, 2012, the festive atmosphere of the Kentucky Derby was pierced by a grim discovery. The body of 48-year-old Adan Fabian Perez, a male native of Guatemala, was found in a barn at the iconic Churchill Downs racetrack in Louisville, Kentucky. Perez was a groom who lived and worked on the backside of the track, an area that serves as a small community for hundreds of track workers.
