In the summer of 2015, a man named John Allen Bullock, aged 46, had recently moved to Louisville, Kentucky, seeking a new chapter in his life. He found a residence at 1133 South Second Street in the historic Old Louisville neighborhood, a three-story building converted into apartments. Tragically, his time there was cut short in the most horrific way imaginable. Only a few days after moving in, a devastating fire engulfed the building in the early morning hours.
Firefighters were called to a chaotic scene with flames consuming the structure and residents desperately trying to escape. Some were forced to jump from the upper floors to save their own lives. Amidst the smoke and collapsing infrastructure, emergency responders pulled John from the inferno. He was alive but had sustained severe injuries from the fire. For a week, he fought for his life in a local hospital, surrounded by the love and hope of his family who had rushed to his side. Despite the efforts of medical staff, the damage was too extensive, and he succumbed to his injuries.
The fire that claimed John's life also resulted in the deaths of two other residents, Theresa Shultz, 51, and Florence Filatreau, 51, who were found in their second-floor bedrooms and had died from smoke inhalation. The nature of the blaze was immediately deemed suspicious by investigators. A break in the long-stagnant case finally came in October 2022 when a witness came forward with crucial information. This new lead allowed investigators to finally identify a suspect, a man named Michael Robertson. Surveillance video from the time of the fire had captured a person leaving the building just before it was reported, and with the new information, authorities were able to connect this individual to the crime. However, the pursuit of justice would not lead to a courtroom. The Louisville Fire Department announced that the suspect, Michael Robertson, had died in 2023. While he would never face charges for his actions, the identification of the person responsible brought a measure of closure to the families of John Bullock, Theresa Shultz, and Florence Filatreau after a decade of uncertainty.
