In the quiet community of Ravenel, South Carolina, a domestic dispute on May 17, 2016, escalated into a tragedy that claimed the lives of three generations of a family. On that Tuesday afternoon, Charleston County Sheriff's deputies were dispatched to a mobile home park on Savannah Highway following reports of gunfire. Inside one of the homes, they discovered a scene of immense violence.
Fifty-five-year-old Betty Mungin, a Black female, was found deceased near the front door.
Further inside the residence, authorities located the bodies of Betty's 29-year-old daughter, Alexis Mungin, and her 8-year-old granddaughter, Armani Mungin. Both had also been fatally shot. The tragedy was compounded by the fact that Alexis was pregnant with twins at the time of her death. Another of Betty's daughters, Quiwanna Mungin, was discovered outside, having sustained multiple gunshot wounds as she attempted to flee the horrific scene. Miraculously, her infant son was found unharmed inside the mobile home, lying on an inflatable mattress.
The suspect, identified as 23-year-old Kenneth Ancrum, was apprehended by deputies at the scene. Ancrum was the ex-boyfriend of the surviving victim, Quiwanna, and the father of her baby. The motive for the shooting appeared to be rooted in an ongoing domestic conflict that had reached a breaking point earlier that day after a dispute concerning a paternity test for their child. Ancrum, an Army veteran with a prior history of domestic violence charges, had legally purchased the firearm used in the killings.
Following his arrest, Kenneth Ancrum was charged with multiple counts of murder for the deaths of Betty, Alexis, and Armani Mungin, as well as for the deaths of Alexis's unborn twins. He also faced charges of attempted murder for the shooting of Quiwanna Mungin and weapons possession. During his initial court appearance, he was denied bond on the murder charges. Ultimately, Ancrum was convicted for his role in the mass shooting and received five life sentences, ensuring he would be held accountable for the devastating loss he inflicted upon the Mungin family and the Ravenel community.
