Just after midnight on March 18, 2017, firefighters responded to a report of a car fire on Mud Lane. After extinguishing the flames engulfing the vehicle, they found a body in the backseat. The victim was identified as 51-year-old Cleveland Curtis Pope, a Black male.
An investigation by the Louisville Metro Police Department's Homicide Unit soon revealed a more sinister story.
The coroner determined that Pope had died from a gunshot wound before the fire was set. Officials stated that he had suffered burns to 95 percent of his body. His death was officially ruled a homicide, prompting an investigation by both homicide detectives and the Metro Arson unit.
Friends of Pope were left in shock, seeking justice for his violent death. One childhood friend, Maurice Washington, remembered Pope as a good person who had been actively turning his life around and becoming more focused and serious. Despite these positive changes, his life was cut short in what Washington described as a cruel act. As of now, the investigation into Cleveland Pope's murder remains ongoing, and no arrests have been announced in connection with the case. Police have not released any information regarding potential suspects.
