In what should have been a celebratory time filled with the promise of graduation, the life of 18-year-old Udeh Joshua Osuagwu was tragically cut short. On May 11, 2019, the young man from Greenville, South Carolina, was fatally shot in his apartment at the Waterside Greene Apartments on Woodruff Road. The incident unfolded in the early morning hours, around 3 a.m., when a group of individuals broke into his residence. Osuagwu was discovered with a gunshot wound to the head and was rushed to Greenville Memorial Hospital, where he ultimately succumbed to his injuries.

The investigation into Osuagwu's death, which marked Greenville's first murder of 2019, revealed a chilling motive rooted in a social media post. Authorities determined that a post by Osuagwu, showing him with a significant amount of cash, attracted the attention of the perpetrators and led them to believe he had a large sum of money in his apartment. This belief prompted a plan to rob him, a plan that quickly escalated into a violent and fatal encounter. On the night of the incident, two women reportedly entered the apartment to gather information before three armed men forced their way in.

The intruders demanded money, and when their demands were not met, they resorted to threats and violence against those inside the apartment. During the confrontation, one of the armed men shot Osuagwu as he sat on his couch. In the aftermath of the shooting, a swift police investigation led to the arrest of five suspects. Four individuals—Darius Antonia J'quan Rhodes, 18; Natasha Nicole Booker, 17; Tommy Lee Long, 21; and Jaylan Horatio Marques Fair, 24—faced a litany of serious charges. These charges included murder, first-degree burglary, armed robbery, kidnapping, first-degree assault and battery, criminal conspiracy, and possession of a weapon during a violent crime. A fifth individual, 17-year-old Jevonda Lenae Dillard, was charged with accessory after the fact to felony murder.
