James Cleveland “Toe” Johnson was a 54-year-old Black man from Ridge Spring, South Carolina, whose ordinary, rooted life ended violently on December 6, 2020. Born in Saluda on December 27, 1965, he was the son of Dorothy Lee Lott Johnson and the late Cleveland Johnson, part of a family deeply tied to the small communities of Saluda County.
