On the evening of December 19th, Christian was walking home when a car pulled up beside him near the intersection of 43rd and Market Street. Shots were fired from the vehicle, striking the teenager. He was rushed to the hospital but ultimately succumbed to his injuries, leaving his family and community devastated.
His parents, Krista and Nevada Gwynn, remember him as a goofy and wonderful son who worked as a security guard and had aspirations of becoming a rapper.

An investigation revealed that a stolen red Chevy Malibu was seen fleeing the scene of the shooting, and police determined Hayden had been in possession of the vehicle at the time of the murder. Hayden was subsequently charged with murder, receiving stolen property, and possession of a handgun by a convicted felon. For Christian's family, the arrest brought a face to their grief and a renewed focus for their anger and pursuit of justice.
The legal proceedings that followed saw a significant change in the charges against Jameko Hayden. In early 2023, he accepted a plea deal, pleading guilty to the lesser charge of second-degree manslaughter, as well as receiving stolen property and possession of a handgun by a convicted felon. This development was a source of further pain for the Gwynn family, who felt that the recommended 10-year sentence was not sufficient for the loss of their son's life. In April 2023, a judge formally sentenced Hayden to 10 years in prison. Despite the conclusion of the court case, Christian's parents have expressed that true closure remains elusive, as no verdict can bring back their beloved son.
