In the fall of 2021, the life of 29-year-old Michael Warren was tragically cut short in a burst of violence at a North Charleston, South Carolina apartment complex. On the night of November 12th, or early the next morning, Warren was fatally shot at the Palmetto Grove apartments located on St. Ives Road. The Charleston County Coroner's Office later identified Warren as the victim of the deadly shooting.
The investigation into the homicide led North Charleston police to identify a
suspect. Shortly after the incident, authorities arrested Willie Leo Darby, who was 24 years old at the time, in connection with Warren's death. Darby was subsequently charged with murder and a weapon-related offense for his alleged role in the fatal shooting.
Legal proceedings against Willie Darby commenced, but the path to trial was not swift. Nearly four years after Michael Warren's death, the murder trial faced a significant delay due to pre-trial motions and legal arguments. A key issue arose concerning recently discovered cell phone evidence that the court ruled inadmissible. This ruling led to a postponement of the trial as the prosecution, considering the new evidence crucial to their case, weighed their options on how to proceed with the charges against Darby.
