On a tragic evening in Seabrook, South Carolina, a gathering that should have been filled with joy turned into a scene of devastating violence, irrevocably altering the lives of two families. Shaina Syamone Mulligan, a 30-year-old Black or African American woman from Beaufort, was at a party on Detour Road on the night of December 4, 2021. Remembered as a devoted stay-at-home mother of two, Shaina was known for her loyalty and her readiness to support those she loved.
The festive
atmosphere of the party was shattered around 11 p.m. when a dispute escalated into gunfire. In the ensuing chaos, both Shaina Mulligan and 74-year-old Flora Mae Gantt of Walterboro were struck by bullets. Deputies from the Beaufort County Sheriff's Office arrived to a grim scene. Flora Mae Gantt was pronounced dead at the party, while Shaina Mulligan succumbed to her injuries while being transported to the hospital. The community was left in shock, mourning the loss of two vibrant women.
The investigation into the double homicide quickly pointed to 22-year-old Dionte Mitchell of Seabrook as a person of interest. Though he initially met with investigators to give his account of the events, he was not immediately charged. As the investigation progressed, however, warrants were issued for his arrest on two counts of murder and one count of possession of a weapon during the commission of a violent crime. Believing Mitchell had fled the state, the U.S. Marshals Service was called in to assist in the search.
After a months-long search, Dionte Mitchell was apprehended in Queens, New York, on June 8, 2022, and was subsequently extradited back to Beaufort County to face the charges against him. In a surprising turn of events, Mitchell was granted bond in July 2022, under the conditions that he adhere to a curfew, not possess firearms, and have no contact with the victims' families. However, by February 2023, his bond was revoked, and he was taken back into custody at the Beaufort County Detention Center. Dionte Mitchell is still awaiting trial for the murders of Shaina Mulligan and Flora Mae Gantt.
