In the summer of 2022, the life of 40-year-old Steven New, a Black male from Orangeburg, South Carolina, was tragically cut short. On the evening of June 27th, New was the victim of a fatal shooting. Another individual, 39-year-old Brian McFadden, also lost his life in the same incident. The Orangeburg County Sheriff's Office was called to the scene to begin what would become a complex homicide investigation.
From the outset, law enforcement treated the deaths as a double homicide.
The initial days of the investigation were critical, as deputies and investigators worked to piece together the events that led to the deadly encounter. The Sheriff's Office indicated that their inquiry suggested foul play was involved, and they began to pursue leads to identify those responsible for the deaths of New and McFadden.
As the investigation progressed, the Orangeburg County Sheriff's Office announced that they had identified several individuals as suspects in connection with the double homicide. These individuals were subsequently arrested, bringing a sense of hope for justice to the victims' families and the community. The suspects faced a range of serious charges, including murder, armed robbery, and possession of a weapon during the commission of a violent crime. The legal process that followed saw the accused individuals brought before the court to answer for the crimes they were alleged to have committed.
