In the quiet early morning hours of November 21, 1997, in Powhattan, Kansas, the life of 28-year-old Caucasian female Jodie L. Bordeaux was tragically cut short. She and her husband, Shawn Bordeaux, were in the living room of their farmhouse on the Kickapoo Indian Reservation when the sound of popping noises shattered the peace. Initially, Shawn thought a light bulb had exploded, but a cloud of dust and debris quickly revealed a more sinister reality.
As the couple scrambled for safety, Jodie ran towards the bedroom. When the barrage of bullets ceased, Shawn called out for his wife and, receiving no answer, found her on the bedroom floor with a fatal gunshot wound to the head. At the time of her death, Jodie was seven months pregnant with their first child, a daughter they had named Jordan Shay, who also did not survive. Shawn’s frantic 911 call brought the Brown County Sheriff's Department to the scene, but it was too late to save either Jodie or her unborn baby.
