On a road in the 600 block of Pershing Street, law enforcement found the body of 48-year-old Sandra Pendergrass. The investigation quickly zeroed in on a
primary suspect: Sandra's estranged husband, Todd Pendergrass, who was also 48 years old. The couple had been separated since June of that year, and their history included at least one documented domestic dispute in 1999, a verbal altercation that had been peacefully resolved by deputies. On the day of the murder, a witness reported seeing a man, believed to be Todd, pointing a gun at a woman, thought to be Sandra, near West Farm Road 124. Another witness later recounted seeing Sandra being shot in or near a car in Willard, where her body was later found.
The tragic story reached its conclusion when Todd Pendergrass was found dead in Dade County from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Before taking his own life, he confessed to family members, including his daughter and brother, that he had killed his wife.
