On January 20, 2015, deputies in Lincoln County, Missouri, were called to a residence situated off Highway 79 in an unincorporated area near the town of Elsberry. Upon entering the rental home, authorities discovered the body of a 38-year-old female, Harmony Mischelle Culbreath. She had sustained a fatal gunshot wound, prompting immediate concern regarding the nature of her death.
Due to the circumstances, the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office requested the assistance of the Major Case Squad of Greater St. Louis to lead the inquiry, treating the incident initially as a suspicious death.
Detectives launched a comprehensive investigation, dedicating approximately twenty investigators to the case who followed up on dozens of leads to determine if foul play was involved. Harmony Culbreath was known in the region as a professional singer who performed at various venues and was the mother of four young children. As the investigation unfolded, authorities awaited final autopsy results and analyzed evidence collected from the scene to establish a timeline of the events leading up to the tragedy.
Despite the initial ambiguity that led to the activation of the Major Case Squad, the investigation eventually took a decisive turn. On January 23, 2015, investigators announced that the death had been ruled a suicide. Law enforcement officials revealed that an audio recording made by Culbreath herself was recovered, which indicated that the gunshot wound was self-inflicted. Consequently, the classification of the case as a homicide was ruled out, and no suspects were pursued or arrests made in connection with her death.
