A woman is found strangled to death at McCormick's Creek State Park In the summer of 1972, the life of a young woman named Vickie Lynn Harrell was tragically cut short, leaving a mystery that has lingered for decades. A 25-year-old Caucasian female, Vickie was last seen on August 12th in the K-Mart parking lot on the east side of Bloomington, Indiana, getting into her dark blue 1965 Plymouth Valiant. When she failed to return to her Spencer home, her roommate grew concerned and reported her missing to the Bloomington Police Department on August 13th.
The
following day, August 14th, brought a grim discovery. A highway worker found Vickie's nude body face-down in a water-filled ditch along Concord Road, an access road to McCormick's Creek State Park, just a few miles east of Spencer. An autopsy would later reveal that she had been strangled, possibly with a rope. In a particularly disturbing detail, the letters 'KN' had been carved into her chest after her death. Her car was later found abandoned in a parking lot near the College Mall in Bloomington, miles from where her body was discovered, suggesting she had been taken from one location and her body left in another.
The investigation into Vickie Lynn Harrell's murder involved multiple law enforcement agencies, including the Indiana State Police, the Owen County Sheriff's Department, and the Bloomington Police Department. Despite their efforts, no arrests have ever been made in connection with her death.
