On May 18, 2016, a violent disturbance occurred at a residence in the rural community of Dittmer, Missouri, resulting in the tragic death of 57-year-old Kenneth Eugene Mann. Mann, a male resident of the area, was at a home located in the 9900 block of Jones Creek Road when the incident unfolded during the afternoon hours. He was known to his friends and family as a United States Navy veteran who had a passion for music and enjoyed working on cars.
The events leading to the homicide began
when a stranger arrived at the property around 3:40 p.m. The individual, later identified by authorities as a 27-year-old man from Labadie, Missouri, reportedly knocked on the door and began demanding the return of a vehicle he believed was at the location. The suspect was looking for a 1999 Saturn, but the occupants of the home informed him that they had no knowledge of the car or the person he was seeking. The situation quickly escalated from a verbal dispute into a physical confrontation between the intruder and the residents.
During the struggle, the suspect produced a pistol and fired shots at the two men present. Mann was struck in the stomach and chest area, sustaining critical injuries. The homeowner, a 49-year-old man, was also shot in the leg during the altercation. Emergency responders and deputies from the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office rushed to the scene, but Mann was pronounced dead after being transported to a hospital. The surviving victim received treatment for his gunshot wound and was expected to recover.
The Jefferson County Sheriff's Office requested the assistance of the Major Case Squad of Greater St. Louis to lead the homicide investigation. Detectives worked quickly to track down the assailant. The investigation led to the arrest of Jesse Wayne Murray, who was taken into custody the following morning by the Franklin County Sheriff's Department. Authorities subsequently charged Murray with second-degree murder, first-degree assault, and two counts of armed criminal action. Following the charges, he was held on a $500,000 cash-only bond.
