On the morning of July 1, 2016, a violent domestic tragedy unfolded in the parking lot of a strip mall in Belton, Missouri. Tina Fuller, a 42-year-old female, was taking a smoke break outside her workplace in the 800 block of East North Avenue when the quiet of the late morning was shattered. Just before 11:00 a.m., a gunshot rang out, alerting a nearby witness who discovered Fuller mortally wounded on the pavement.
Despite the rapid response of emergency crews who rushed her to a nearby hospital, she succumbed to her injuries and was pronounced dead.
The investigation quickly identified the assailant as Shawn Fuller, the victim's estranged husband from Kansas City. Witnesses at the scene observed a man, later confirmed to be Shawn, fleeing the area in a black SUV immediately after the shooting. Law enforcement learned that the couple was in the process of a divorce, providing a grim context to the fatal encounter. A multi-agency response was initiated, with Grandview police eventually spotting the suspect's vehicle as he headed north on U.S. 49.
When officers attempted to conduct a traffic stop, Shawn Fuller refused to pull over, sparking a high-speed pursuit that extended into Kansas City. The chase came to a violent end near the intersection of 85th Street and Prospect Avenue, where he crashed his vehicle. Witnesses reported seeing him flee the wreckage on foot, armed with a handgun, and run into a nearby wooded area. A search perimeter was established involving ground units and a police helicopter. The manhunt concluded in the woods near the 3000 block of East 85th Street, where authorities discovered Shawn Fuller deceased from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Due to the death of the sole suspect, there were no arrests, trials, or convictions in connection with the murder.
