What appeared to be a routine child custody exchange between his daughter, Elizabeth Kilgore, and her estranged husband, Lance Kilgore, took a violent and tragic turn. This event was not a random act of violence but the final chapter of a bitter custody dispute.
Charles Sander, who was reportedly terminally
ill, had been enlisted by his daughter to resolve the contentious divorce and custody battle over her young son. Authorities alleged that Elizabeth Kilgore convinced her ailing father to murder her estranged husband and then take his own life to stage it as a murder-suicide. On that fateful day, Charles Sander accompanied his ex-wife, Nancy Sander, to the custody exchange.
Security footage from the convenience store captured the chilling moments that followed. While Nancy Sander engaged Lance Kilgore in conversation, Charles Sander emerged from their vehicle and approached them. He then shot his son-in-law multiple times before turning the gun on himself, ending his own life.
