On the night of October 24, 2021, officers from the Kansas City Police Department were dispatched to a residential area near East 113th Terrace and Askew Avenue following reports of a shooting. Upon arrival after 11:00 p.m., first responders discovered 18-year-old male Devin Dayshawn Jacobs unresponsive in front of a home. Emergency medical personnel assessed the situation, but Jacobs was declared deceased at the scene.
The incident marked the second fatal shooting in the city within a 90-minute window that evening, though police investigated the events as separate occurrences.
Witnesses at the scene informed investigators that a disturbance had broken out between Jacobs and at least one other individual prior to the gunfire. The altercation reportedly occurred outside a house party that had been continuing from a celebration the previous night. Jacobs, who had only recently turned 18 the month prior, had been in attendance before the dispute escalated into lethal violence. Detectives from the homicide unit began canvassing the area for evidence and seeking information from those present to piece together the sequence of events leading to the tragedy.
