In the small city of Charleston, Missouri, a night of celebration turned into a scene of tragedy, forever altering the lives of many. On February 19, 2022, a party being held in a cinder block building that once housed an auto mechanic shop was shattered by the sound of gunfire. When the chaos subsided, two young women lay dead and fourteen other attendees were left with injuries. One of the lives lost was that of 19-year-old Brianna 'Daisy' Schumer of Cape Girardeau. A 2020 graduate of Cape Central High School, Brianna was known for her love of life, enjoying travel and spending time with her friends and family.
The party, which had drawn a crowd of up to 100 people from various communities across Missouri and Illinois, became a scene of mass violence. In the aftermath of the shooting, the Charleston Department of Public Safety began an intensive investigation. In addition to Brianna Schumer, 23-year-old Clintayzia Clark was also identified as a victim who had been fatally shot. The incident left four other individuals in critical or serious condition.
The investigation led authorities to two suspects, both from Charleston. Kevon Evans-McClinton, 21, and Zatyrus Moore, 19, were taken into custody in connection with the deadly shooting. They were subsequently charged with two counts of second-degree murder, two counts of first-degree assault, four counts of unlawful use of a weapon, and four counts of armed criminal action. Following their arrest, both men were held in the Mississippi County Jail without bond as the community mourned the senseless loss of two young lives and prayed for the recovery of the injured.
